In sickness… and in health

by angelique on January 20th, 2008

So I’m sick.  I’m sick as a dog (or a “dawg” if you’re Randy from American Idol.)  And it got me to thinking…

When I was in the midst of my days (and nights) of dancing with Ana, I actually relished being ill.  I loved feeling that scratchiness in my throat, the nausea in my stomach, the wooziness in my brain.

Why?

Simple:  It meant I would probably lose weight.

Let’s face it — when you’re sick, you tend to shed pounds (usually just water weight, but for someone with an ED, that doesn’t matter.)  It’s a “quick fix.”  And if you’re bulimic, you don’t have to go through the binge/purge cycle for a few days — you just let Mother Nature take its course.

Now that’s a sign that you’re not healthy.

I used to get a sore throat and cough every fall with the weather change. When I developed the cough one season while at the height of my ED, I refused to treat the cough with cough drops, because I found out they have calories. Sometimes I reflect back on my actions during that period and I just have to laugh at myself because laughing is much better than the alternative.

    Rachel:

Laughter is the best way to go sometimes, isn’t it? And I did that, too. Cough syrup, cough drops, anything. I would easily sacrifice comfort to save five or ten calories. Bizarre behavior to others, but if you’ve been there, it makes sense somehow.

    Thanks for dropping by!
